On a Black National Anthem

I read a post recently that said the NFL is planning to have “The Black National Anthem” (Lift Every Voice and Sing) played before the original National Anthem at their scheduled games. This was the first time I have heard of a Black National Anthem.

A country, any country, is held together by common beliefs and patriotism. I have been sure, until recently, that our country had those qualities.

I have said that I am upset and confused by protestors and politicians who condone tearing down statues and emblems of our past largely because I believe that it is our history that makes us Americans.

I have no problems with adding additional statues to honor as yet unrecognized heroes. In my opinion, that would also strengthen our bonds. I have no problem with acknowledging the flaws, as well as the heroic deeds, of our forefathers. It is therapeutic to examine our faults. It is also therapeutic to relish and glory in our many accomplishments as a country. There is no other country in the world that has so many people trying to enter illegally or legally, I think that shows we are doing something right.

The word “common” was chosen because of its’ connecting qualities. My fear is that a country made up of only individuals who feel no common bond is doomed. I would not be inclined to take up arms to protect a country I was not connected to. I would not feel compelled to pay taxes, or obey rules enacted by that government.

Growing up, I was taught to be completely colorblind as far as race. I believe we are all humans and common in that bond.

I fear that ANYTHING that says we are not equal segregates us. To say there needs to be a Black National Anthem is, in my opinion, saying that the Blacks are not included in the National Anthem we have used since 1916, I have always felt they have been. I have spoken to Black friends and acquaintances who had the same opinion. They were not aware of having their own Anthem and were not in favor of it. I know this is not a reliable survey, but I also submit that many sources used for the opinions of Blacks in our country are not accurate. There is a growing number of Black conservatives who denounce the accepted practice of the media going to Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson to ascertain “The Black view” on issues. Who do they go to for “The White view?”

My hope is that the media and powerful industry and sports leaders will back away from the current practice of capitulating to groups like (BLM) Black Lives Matter (Who are recipients of millions of dollars in donations from them). I hope the practice of the media using actual numbers to document events will soon return. It would be wonderful to see a story that reports accurate numbers such as 1 in 700 Blacks killed violently is killed by police. Perhaps those stories could go on to report that we demand communities finally get help in fighting Black on Black violence. Perhaps the millions of dollars donated to hate groups such as BLM would be donated to charities who help reunite families and lift individuals up with job training, addiction/rehabilitation and other family services.

I don’t believe the road to unity and equality is through segregation.

Thanks, Phil
