I wrote of suicide on June 26th, the anniversary of my son Danny’s death.
Today is July 16th. It would have been Danny’s 27th birthday.
There is a saying, “TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS.” I am tempted to add an addendum onto that saying that would read, “SOME WOUNDS, HOWEVER, TAKE A LOT OF TIME TO HEAL.”
I wrote this poem for Danny mostly because, at that point, there was nothing else I could do but pray. I did pray; and I did write.
DANIEL,
I lost my son just yesterday one of God’s brightest lights.
A child tormented while at school but with family, kept smiling bright.
He answered questions thoughtfully to him no subject was light.
But I lost my son just yesterday he was one of God’s brightest lights.
His name was Daniel this son of mine he liked to be called Danny or Dan.
He wouldn’t hurt anyone intentionally I was proud of my soft-spoken man.
In high school he tried to fit in, so on cross country he ran.
This helped a little, but didn’t work, he was bullied by souls lower than Dan.
He was prone to silliness to lighten the mood somber faces he could not accept.
But in a room filled with strangers he just didn’t fit he couldn’t find ways to adapt.
I lost my son just yesterday, he was one of God’s brightest lights.
I pray he’s in heaven with family a happy end to my son’s lifelong fight.
