I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.

Ronald Reagan said those were the 9 most terrifying words in the English language. I agree!

If The Corona Virus wasn’t bad enough, I think, the government has made it worse by trying to fix it.

Oversimplified, Yes, but that’s what we on the outside do, isn’t it?

I have read on line, in “The Conversation,” that the government will pay almost 3 trillion dollars on the Corona Virus benefits. The article stated that about 1.2 trillion, so far, has been paid to American companies small and large. I have written in previous articles that I am scared what the reaction to the feared pandemic is doing to businesses, mostly small businesses like bars and restaurants, but I am honestly more scared of what the total bill is going to be.

I agree with what James Madison, one of our founding fathers, said, “Charity is not part of the legislative duty of the government.” Madison also said, “I can not undertake to lay my finger on that article of the constitution which granted a right to congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.”

I have a large family. Sometimes my children ask for loans and I have to say, “I just don’t have the money.” Then, in many cases, we find a way we can accomplish the task with less money, put it off, or the child borrows from a different source- usually one with a higher interest rate.

I live in Illinois. I have never heard my state government officials say, “We can’t afford that.” In the middle of an election the sitting governor said he didn’t see any way he could avoid raising taxes, again. My state is so screwed up he was elected, and that was the one campaign promise he kept. He did raise our taxes! In a household, or private business, when the money isn’t there it is necessary to find an alternative. In government they buy, then they tax or borrow, but they don’t know how to say no to any expenditure.

Regardless of the jurisdiction, local, state, federal governments, have you seen any fiscal responsibility? Like Winston Churchill, the famous WWII Prime Minister of England said, “There is nothing the government can give to you that that it hasn’t taken in the first place.” When does this stop? The people who are supposed to be watching out for our interests are the only people I know of who feel they can say the word, “ONLY” when they’re talking about millions, billions or even trillions of dollars, after all, it’s for a good cause! Right?

I don’t want to see anybody endangered, but I would like to maintain my freedoms. I am told by my governor that I can’t go shopping without a mask on. I am told I can’t enter any buildings open to the public without a mask on. Businesses are told they can not conduct business, or if the benevolent government does allow the business to re-open it must be curtailed in number, seating and other restrictions. In New York Governor Cuomo has put restrictions on restaurants and bars selling alcohol. Customers not only must buy food to be “allowed” to buy alcohol, Cuomo has placed limitations on what is considered food- I know he’s tried to monitor diets before, but the pandemic scare has given him more power!

Aww the worst that will happen is more restaurants and bars will close and then the government can give the newly unemployed some benefits out of that 3 trillion, maybe it will go up to 4 trillion, I guess it doesn’t really matter at this point.

Thanks for reading this.

Please comment, I look forward to hearing what you think about this topic.

  1. Well Said. The federal government just prints more money or the gov’t borrows money. The federal government can barely cover the interest on its loans. A few state governments have a balanced budget policy. That is how all government should act. Responsibly.
