And now, something a little lighter

With all the drama our country is involved in right now I need to take a trip back in time to a place where my biggest worries were if I could get a date for the dance or how my favorite sports team was doing. I hope you’re up for a little time travel.

There are a few “Oldies Stations” in my neck of the woods that play the following songs and more, I have not yet embraced the new app’s. As I listen to my own version of WOLD I have enjoyed these songs:

Five O’Clock World by the Vogues. This came out in 1966. I was in grade school and didn’t really relate to the workingman’s struggle it dealt with. I liked the sound, and I was just starting to find it interesting that he had a “Long haired girl” waiting for him.

Stuck In The Middle With You by Stealer’s Wheel, This was a hit in 1972, My friends and I were driving and there were a lot of times I ended up with clowns to my left, and jokers to right.

The Time of the Season, by The Zombies, I was still a “Wanna be” anything but a middle schooler- We played it at all the parties and turned the lights down and the strobe lights on, at least until the parents came down the stairs.

Listen People & I’m Henry the VIIIth, by Herman’s Hermits, 1966 & 1965, I liked both songs. I fancied myself as a guitar player in the making and I loved the guitar in Listen People. I’m Henry The VIIIth is a song my sisters and I sang once while being forced to do the dinner dishes. My mother liked the song so we were now forced to sing Henry The VIIIth and do the dishes.

What’s New Pussycat, by Tom Jones, came out in 1965. Brings back good memories.

Hey Baby, by Bruce Channel, it came out in 1961. I loved the harmonica in it.

Blame it on The Bosanova, Eydie Gormet, 1963. It brings back great memories. I had an older cousin who would have the younger cousins guess song titles and artists, the cousins that lived closer to him always cleaned house against us suburban kids.

For the Longest Time, Billy Joel, 1983. It was a happy song about love and I was engaged.

Sunshine of Your Love, By Cream, 1967. Another psychodelic song for my middle school parties.

Wheel In the Sky, Journey, 1978. I was living in a college town. Had a steady girl back home that I was sure I would marry- nope-. This song , somehow, spoke to the angst I felt back then.

The Gambler, Kenny Rogers, 1978. I was living in a college town at the time. I was in the process of losing my first love and I would often have this song on my mind as I would be riding “The Train They Call The City of New Orleans” from Chicago to Carbondale.

Hey Joe, Jimi Hendrix, 1967. I was a little shocked by the lyrics- “….Going down to shoot my old lady, caught her messing around with another man…” maybe that’s why I liked it so much.

Rebel Yell, Billy Idol, 1983. I just started with the girl I would marry, I was feeling a little like a rebel. I had my own business. I was feeling it.

Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lyn, 1970. I always liked her style and the song had her story in it.

Dixieland Delight, Alabama, 1983. I liked most of Alabama’s songs, This one is upbeat and light. Easy to dance to, if I knew how to dance.

One Piece at a Time, Johnny Cash, 1976. I like most of the songs The man in Black sang. This one tells of a man. in this song it is a man who built his own Cadillac by stealing on piece at a time.

I hope this made you smile. There should be at least one title in here that you like. If not I’ll do it again sometime.

Please comment about your memorable songs, I’d love to hear.

Thanks,

Phil

  1. You have a good memory. I liked all of those songs, but I couldn’t remember who sang some of them. I like listening to the Oldies too.

  2. I have read some just right stuff here. Certainly worth bookmarking for revisiting.
I surprise how much effort you place to make this kind of great informative
    site.
