I worked in law enforcement for over 35 years. In the current state of our country that statement gets sneers and eye rolls from most of the media and many of our politicians.
So be it.
Either I hang around with the minority who appreciate the police, or I am correct in assuming that most Americans are glad that they can call 911 when they need to and a trained officer will come to their aid.
Enough of that.
My thought today is about trespassers. While I was assigned to the patrol division of a large suburb outside of Chicago it was not unusual to be called to assist a property owner who complained of a trespasser refusing to leave their land.
Sometimes these calls involved a degree of danger. Maybe a former lover of the complainant who, as a result of previous batteries, is now violating an order of protection. Or an intoxicated bar patron who is violently resisting the bouncers attempt to remove him.
Other calls were more routine involving homeless individuals sleeping in apartment building foyers or patrons refusing to leave businesses because of disputes reported to be verbal in nature.
The reason I was brought back to my days in law enforcement and removing trespassers is simple.
Today, while I was mowing my lawn, I found a trespassers. At first I was alarmed,
I quickly regained my composure and made a decision as to the fate of this violator of my property rights.
I first took a photograph of the offender.
OK, It’s not a human trespasser.
OK, there’s no crime involved!
I finally came to this conclusion myself so I finished the lawn and, successfully, resisted the temptation to try to handcuff the offender or call the police.
