I’m sure you knew immediately I was writing about junk drawers. What else could I have meant?
When I was a kid, living at home, my mother was a clean freak; yet we managed to have a junk drawer! It did not please her, but it happened and despite her regular efforts at organizing and cleaning and yelling and warning- the contents of the junk drawer continued to grow.
In my adult life I have lived in several houses, apartments and even a trailer house when I was going to college.
Each place I moved into had one thing in common. When I moved in all of the drawers, closets and cabinets were empty. They had a second thing in common, before I was there a week the drawer I relegated to being the place for miscellaneous crap was near full to a point that it was difficult to open. I never intended to fill any drawer that full. It would be madness to do such a thing! But I did, and I still do!
My plan is always to just put a few things that have not been given a designated spot someplace handy to stay.
A screwdriver! I’ll need one in the kitchen because the door handle on the stove gets loose every once in awhile. I’ve noticed the screws on the screen door to the backyard come loose also. Oh! Darn it! The stove has Phillip’s head screws and the screen door has standard- oh well, two screwdrivers aren’t gonna hurt anything.
I bought keys for all of the kids and made a few extra because kids lose things. I’ll put the extra keys in the junk drawer- there’s room!
Checking the mail I find a welcome wagon envelope. Wow! Coupons for local pizza places, sit down restaurants, garages, parts stores, pet stores and more. I may need one or two of these one day. It’s a pretty thick envelope, but I can fit it in the junk drawer.
The kids stole the batteries out of the TV remote for their toys again. I’ll run up to the store and get an assortment of fifty batteries (All sizes). I can store them in the junk drawer.
Ah! It’s back to school time. This year I’ll be smart and buy double the supplies. I’ll send the kids to school with what they need and I’ll put the rest in the junk drawer for when they do their homework, I think there’s room.
I have to measure for the new dishwasher, I’ll just leave the measuring tape here (In the junk drawer) so I don’t have to walk to the garage every time I need it.
I just found this re-charger on the counter. We’re expecting guests so I’ll just throw it in the junk drawer.
My pockets are bulging with change from shopping. I’ll put it in the junk drawer so I’ll know where it is.
We have candles leftover from the birthday cake. I’ll put them in the junk drawer so we don’t have to search for them before the next celebration.
I never can find a pen when I do the bills in the kitchen- and Oh, by the way! There are never any pencils to do the crossword puzzles. I’ll get a pack of each and put them in the junk drawer.
As I was writing this I wanted to check the spelling of a word in the pocket dictionary I keep in the junk drawer. I’ll have to check on my phone- I can’t open the junk drawer for some reason. I don’t know how it gets so full!
