I was listening to Petula Clark’s hit “Downtown” from 1965 while I was worrying about the country’s future. I was musing about the plans to tax our social security while inflation is not yet under control. My mind was troubled while I was filling out job applications. I retired in 2020 and had a strong pension with a modest savings account and social security income to back it.
I was musing about the fact that less than four years ago, my future looked so bright. I was able to add a small amount to my savings account every month; while going on vacations and enjoying the life I had planned to live in retirement. Now, a short time later, I am looking at an enormous credit card debt and trying to plug the hole in my financial boat by getting the third job I have had in retirement.
The party in office has said, officially, (Jared Bernstein-Chair of the United States Council of Economic Advisers) that the US can’t go broke because we can print money.
In an attempt to quell my anxiety I wrote a little ditty that changes the words in Petula Clark’s song. I hope you enjoy it!
When you are broke, because our country’s a joke and jobs just can’t be found
Welfare!
When businesses close because the guy at the top, has changed all the rules,
Welfare!
Look at all the politicians begging for your votes now.
They’re the ones that made it bad with rules and regulations.
Can we survive?
The country’s much tougher now, we have limited options and limited jobs!
We’re on Welfare!
If you can’t work, you choose Welfare!
We’re governed by jerks who give Welfare!
They think they’re buying our votes.
If you’re a person with pride but all your options subsided,
go on Welfare!
Look at all the people who are living in the street now!
They would love to have a job, but options are so bleak now.
How can we survive?
Our lives are much tougher now.
since the government’s entered, where it should not be! This brings us Welfare!
Oh, what a frightful sight!
Welfare!
We must join in the fight!!
Welfare!
Hoping we get a change, now!
Welfare, Welfare, Welfare….
Let me know what you think of it. Thanks for reading.
Phil
I already get taxed on Social Security! How come you don’t?
Cute ditty.
Thanks.
I do get taxed, they’re looking to get more. As Margaret Thatcher once said, “The trouble with socialism is, eventually, you run out of other people’s money!”
